(Fade in) Due to the cold weather, there was an excessive burning of coal. This created airborne pollutants causing a build up of smoke under the heavy layer of warm air. This produced a thicker than usual fog throughout the city. (Fade in) Since London is notorious for its’ foggy conditions, the growing pollution did not cause a panic. (Fade in) In the following weeks, there was an estimated 4,000 premature deaths. (Fade in) Months later, it was reported that there were almost 12,000 deaths in total. (Fade in) This event sparked the Clean Air Act of 1956.
